Holger Cario is Consultant for Pediatric Hematology, Oncology, and Hemostaseology and Clinical Head of the Laboratory for Special Hematological Diagnostics at the Department of Pediatrics and Adolescent Medicine, Ulm University Medical Center (UUMC), Speaker of the Center for Rare Hematopoietic Disorders and Immunodeficiencies (ZSHI Ulm), Center for Rare Diseases at UUMC, and Associate Professor of Pediatrics at the University of Ulm, Germany. After graduation from Charité, Medical School of the Humboldt-University, Berlin, he started a fellowship in pediatrics in Ulm, followed by training and graduation in pediatric hematology and oncology, taking up his current clinical position as consultant in 2006. His particular clinical and scientific interest in non-malignant hematological disorders has included e.g. hemoglobinopathies, rare anemias, and iron overload, and research on congenital and acquired erythrocytoses. Holger Cario is author and co-author of several national guidelines in the area of non-malignant hematology, board member of various study groups within the German Society of Pediatric Oncology and Hematology (GPOH), and past elected GPOH Board member (2012-2018). He is member of national and international scientific and medical associations including EHA and ASH, and long-standing scientific collaborator of the Thalassemia International Federation.
