Virtual Boards

Regular expert meetings to discuss complex rare haematological disease cases

Expertise in rare haematological diseases is scarce and unevenly distributed across Europe. When a physician faces a complex case, the right specialist is not always available in their own hospital or country.

ERN-EuroBloodNet Virtual Boards address this by bringing together experts from across the network at regular, scheduled online meetings. Each board focuses on a specific group of diseases. Its members review submitted patient cases and give the treating physician clear, written recommendations. The expertise travels to the patient, not the other way around.

What is a Virtual Board?

A Virtual Board is a recurring online meeting of a multidisciplinary group of European experts dedicated to one disease area. At each session, physicians present complex cases and the experts discuss them together to agree on recommendations for diagnosis, treatment or follow-up, all managed securely in CPMS 2.0.

Virtual Boards complement the existing case-by-case CPMS consultations. They offer a dedicated space for collective expert discussion, which is particularly valuable for cases that remain unresolved at local or national level.

Why Virtual Boards?

  • Access to specialist advice across borders. Any physician can benefit from the experience of leading European experts.

  • Clear, written recommendations. Every case ends with recommendations documented in CPMS and shared with the referring physician.

  • A structured, predictable format. Meetings follow a regular schedule with a clear agenda and pre-submitted cases.

  • Shared knowledge. Each discussion helps spread expertise and strengthen collaboration across the network.

How does it work?

Each Virtual Board meets regularly.

Ahead of each meeting, a call for cases is announced on the relevant Virtual Board page.

  1. Call for cases. Physicians are invited to submit complex cases for the next meeting.

  2. Submit your case. Complete the case submission template for the relevant disease area, enrol the patient in CPMS 2.0 and attach the completed template to the case. Ideally, let the coordination team know by email before the deadline that your case has been uploaded.

  3. Case review. The coordination team checks that each case is complete and suitable for discussion and invites the relevant experts.

  4. Virtual Board meeting. The case is presented and discussed by the multidisciplinary expert group. A Chair moderates the meeting.

  5. Written recommendations. The recommendations are validated by the Chair and documented in CPMS, where the referring physician can access them.

Patient informed consent. The patient's informed consent is required before a case can be submitted. The signed consent form must be kept by the referring physician and should not be uploaded to CPMS.

The treating physician and the patient remain responsible for all decisions about care.

Organisation

Each Virtual Board is led by designated Chairs and supported by a core pool of multidisciplinary experts. Additional specialists can be invited depending on the clinical question.

The ERN-EuroBloodNet coordination team supports the boards throughout the process, from case submission to the final recommendations.
