ERN-EuroBloodNet Topic on Focus: Inherited Platelet Function Disorders

ERN-EuroBloodNet Topic on Focus on Inherited Platelet Function Disorders (IPFD) is an accredited European online educational program targeting health professionals organized by the ERN-EuroBloodNet in partnership with the CRPP (French Reference Center for Inherited Platelet Disorders) and the Filière MHEMO (French Constitutional Bleeding Disorders Network).

The program consists of a cycle of webinars focused on Inherited Platelet Function Disorders (IPFD) developed in collaboration with Prof. Paul Saultier from Marseille University Hospital (member of the ERN).

The main objective of this educational program is to disseminate up-to-date knowledge among haematologists, paediatricians, internists, clinical pathologists, and other health care professionals involved in the diagnosis and care of patients with IPFDs. IPFDs are rare diseases with diverse genetic backgrounds and heterogeneous clinical manifestations, ranging from mild mucocutaneous bleeding to life-threatening hemorrhages. Their diagnosis is often challenging due to the complexity of platelet function assessment and the overlap with acquired or secondary conditions. This comprehensive series will cover fundamental mechanisms of platelet activation, state-of-the-art diagnostic tools (including platelet function tests, flow cytometry, and genetic testing), and current standards and emerging approaches for patient management. A particular focus will be placed on Glanzmann thrombasthenia as a model disorder, with dedicated sessions exploring its diagnosis, treatment strategies, and management of specific complications such as abnormal uterine bleeding, gastrointestinal hemorrhage, and perioperative bleeding. The program also aims to highlight pediatric-specific aspects and the importance of well-structured transitional care. Ultimately, this initiative supports earlier diagnosis, more accurate phenotyping, and individualized therapeutic strategies to improve patient outcomes.
