Since 2017 the European Reference Networks (ERNs) are working towards improving the access to high quality healthcare for patients with Rare diseases in Europe. After three years of functioning, 7 ERN coordinators, ERN-RND, ERN CRANIO, Endo-ERN, ERKNet, MetabERN, ERN EYE and ERN GENTURIS, have published an evaluation of ERNs, their status, challenges and opportunities.
"European Reference Networks: challenges and opportunities" manuscript comprises the analysis of the actual state and future of the ERNs.
Despite major advances have been achieved during this period, many challenges need to be addressed. The manuscript provides solutions to some of these aspects aiming to address the unmet needs of rare disease patients and their families while ensuring the achievement of ERNs final aims for the provision of best quality healthcare to these patients in Europe.
