Discover more about the ERN-EuroBloodNet experience at the congress in Milan

The EHA Congress is the largest hematology event in Europe, bringing together professionals, researchers, and stakeholders from across the field. The 2025 edition was held in Milan, Italy, from June 12 to 15. ERN-EuroBloodNet had a strong presence at the event, featuring a dedicated booth, active participation in several oral and poster sessions, and the organization of the ERN-EuroBloodNet Board of Network (BoN) meeting.

The event gathered over 17,780 participants including physicians, researchers, policymakers and representatives from 140 countries and featured more than 575 scientific presentations.

As every year, the ERN-EuroBloodNet BoN meeting was held in the framework of the EHA Congress. The meeting brought together 90 participants from 11 European countries, with strong representation from Italy, Belgium, France, and the Netherlands.

The meeting was structured into two main sessions:

- Session 1 "ERN-EuroBloodNet Clinical and Data-Driven Research". Chaired by Pierre Fenaux (Assistance Publique-Hôpitaux de Paris, Hôpital Saint-Louis) and María del Mar Mañú-Pereira (Vall d'Hebron Barcelona Hospital Campus), involved presentations on how ERN-EuroBloodNet can sponsor Clinical Trials for RHD and the role of ERN Registries in advanced research in hematology.

- Session 2 "Clinical Practice Guidelines (CPGs) and Clinical Decision Support Tools (CDSTs)". Chaired by Luca Malcovati (Foundation IRCCS Polyclinic San Matteo), Sabine Blum (Lausanne University Hospital, Switzerland) & Béatrice Gulbis (CUB-Hôpital Erasme), involved the presentation of the new CPGs and CDSTs produced by the ERN as well as the ERN-EuroBloodNet Repository of CPGs/CDSTs.

In addition to the main sessions, the meeting featured highly engaging Q&A discussions, allowing participants to exchange ideas, share experiences, insightful conversations and reflections.

As well, a highly productive meeting with representatives from European Patient Advocacy Groups (ePAGs) was held by the ERN-EuroBloodNet. The session was chaired by Mariangela Pellegrini, ERN-EuroBloodNet Educational & Patients Program Manager, and focused on three key points:

  • A warm welcome to our two new ePAGs, Marius Tanase and Jana Pelouchova.
  • Finalisation of the Terms of Reference (ToR).
  • Agreement on a strategy to engage young adult ePAG representatives.

We also prepared a special agenda for the participation of our members at the Congress. As part of one of the poster's session, Mariangela Pellegrini presented "Establishing consensus on the key components of optimal transition from paediatric to adult care in sickle cell disease across Europe." This work focuses on a key moment for young patients, helping ensure continuous care and better outcomes as they move into adult services.

As part of the "Hematology-in-focus Session" María del Mar Mañú-Pereira, ERN-EuroBloodNet Scientific Coordinator, took the stage with a presentation on "Emergence of rare anemias using extensive sequencing techniques".

Béatrice Gulbis, Co-coordinator of ERN-EuroBloodNet, delivered a spotlight talk on: "State-of-the-Art in Point-of-Care Testing for Neonatal Screening of Sickle Cell Disease (SCD)". An insightful session exploring the latest advances in early, accessible diagnosis for SCD - a key step toward improving outcomes for newborns worldwide.
